Liverpool star goalkeeper Alisson Becker suffered an injury on the opening day of the season as the Reds blew away Norwich City 4-1.
Jurgen Klopp has opted to bring in the experienced Andy Lonergan to ease the pressure on new boy Adrian and the young goalkeepers in the extended squad.
The boss has joked that he is going to wrap Adrian in cotton wool as he’s looking to avoid a potential disaster of a double injury both first-team stoppers.
“I’m not worried at all about how he will do it in the long term, but in the short term the problem is just that he came here with no club when we signed him. We don’t have to talk too much about it, that’s what the experience is for,” Klopp told the club’s official site.
“He looked very good and very sharp from the first session he had with us but of course now we need to be careful [and] pack him in cotton wool pretty much.
“We cannot now do the hardest training with him every day and stuff like this, we have to make him match fit every day, that’s how it is. So that’s what we try and then he will be fine.
“He’s a really, really good goalie and a really good person and since he was in he looked really well, and that’s it.“
With Simon Mignolet securing himself a move to Belgian giants Club Brugge, Adrian was brought in by Klopp to strengthen the team’s options.
Alisson went the entirety of last season without getting injured so Adrian likely wasn’t expecting to be thrust into the starting XI as much as he will over the next month or so.
The decision to bring in Lonergan shows how Klopp is a little worried that lightning may strike twice in the same place – hopefully it doesn’t!
