Lampard’s verdict on Liverpool defeat ahead of Sunday meeting

Frank Lampard has played down the significance of Liverpool’s first defeat of the season ahead of our trip to Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

Both sides lost their group stage openers, with Chelsea going down 1-0 to Valencia at home.

Lampard wasn’t all that surprised to see Sunday’s opponents beaten, stressing that any Champions League away trip is bound to be difficult.

Asked if he was shocked that we lost, he replied, “No. It’s Champions League.

“Of course Liverpool are the current holders and certainly one of the best teams in Europe.

“But anywhere in this Champions League you go is tough.

“I’ve been to Napoli and lost pretty heavily there a few years ago. It’s a tough stadium to go to.

“I’m not saying I expected them to lose but in this competition it’s difficult to win at those places.”

Both teams will now be determined to produce a response in their next game, which could crank up the intensity.

On our side, Virgil van Dijk will look to brush off his late lapse, while the front three will be eyeing a swift return to their ruthless best after their sloppy performances.
