Liverpool are reportedly being investigated by the EFL for fielding an illegible player against MK Dons as the Reds won 2-0.
According to The Athletic, there are concerns that one of the players may not have met the requirements to feature in the competition.
That would mean that the mouth-watering tie between the Reds and Arsenal may be under threat of becoming MK Dons versus the Gunners.
Certainly, if we’ve broken the rules we should be punished, but it does seem a little ridiculous that we’ve possibly made this oversight.
The player in question hasn’t been named, and speculation would only serve to frustrate, but this simple error could see Liverpool thrown out of the Carabao Cup.
Last season, further down the footballing pyramid, Litherland REMYCA FC were thrown out of a cup competition for fielding an illegible player.
If the Reds are found guilty of the offence, and don’t get thrown out of the League Cup then there is bound to be some criticism from the non-league community.
Let’s just hope that the player in question was completely fine to feature in the competition, and this mess can just get swept under the rug.
