Spurs to ‘spring a shock’ upon Liverpool, according to Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool man Mark Lawrenson thinks that Spurs will surprise the Reds this weekend, and add a fresh twist to the early stages of the Premier League title race.

Man City are up against Aston Villa, and look well placed to collect another three points this weekend, while Liverpool take on the Champions League runners-up.

The current gap between us and the Citizens is just six points, and they’ll be hoping to put themselves in a position from where they could leap-frog us if we slip up again.

That being, said we’re at Anfield and it’s very rare that we lose fixtures at our home – but Lawro is expecting a bit of a shock this weekend.

I am at Anfield for this game and think it is a tricky fixture for Liverpool to negotiate,” he told BBC Sport .

In the past few seasons, while Mauricio Pochettino has been in charge of Tottenham, the Reds always know they are going to get a game against Spurs.

Their last visit here, when Tottenham only lost to a late Toby Alderweireld own goal, was an example of that. Spurs had been the better team in the second half.

Nobody is expecting that to be the case this time, after the way Tottenham have played in the past few weeks, but I still think they have got it in them to spring a shock.

While it’s definitely correct that Spurs are the best team we’ll have faced this season in the Premier League so far, I’m not sure I agree with Lawro.

The Reds will be hurting from the lacklustre performance we saw at Old Trafford, and the result in the Champions League can only further galvanise the lads.
