Mamadou Sakho tells fans, ‘I’m a Liverpool soldier,’ after MOTM display

It was almost written in the stars, wasn’t it?

Mamadou Sakho returned to the starting XI last night, much to the delight of Liverpool fans everywhere, and proved them right with a monumental defensive performance.

Starting on the left of a back-three, the French powerhouse barely put a foot wrong and was easily our best player on the night, as we collected a decent draw in the Europa League opener.

And Sakho’s quotes following the games will only make supporters’ opinion of him grow further.

“I’m always ready,” he told L’Equipe, reported in ESPN. “I’m working and I’m a Liverpool soldier. And, when you call on me, I always rise to the challenge.”

The same report confirms that Liverpool have offered the 25-year-old a lengthy new contract and we can only hope that the fans’ constant support and the fact he was given the captaincy last night will help convince him to renew.

We’d be beating a rather tedious drum in claiming that Sakho is easily out best central defender, but if last night didn’t prove it Brendan Rodgers, nothing will.

Thankfully, it seems like the manager recognised Sakho’s contribution and will probably now play him at the weekend.

“Sakho was immense at the back,” Rodgers said. “He knows he has had to be patient and his attitude has been first class.

“He has trained very well, kept professional, done his extra work on his fitness and he has got his rewards for that.

“He certainly comes into the reckoning for the weekend [against Norwich].”
