Medical ‘tomorrow’ as Liverpool close in on next signing

Posted by

Ragnar Klavan looks very likely to become our next signing, with sources from Germany revealing that the Estonian international is set to undergo a medical at Liverpool “tomorrow” on Tuesday 19 July.

Assuming there are no problems with the medical, the 30-year-old looks set to join us before we get started with our tour of America.

The Augsburg captain would be unlikely to come in and be a first-choice, but would be a back-up for Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren while we get some of our other players back from injury.

As the Echo suggests, a £4.2m move is being touted. It would be a low risk move which would cover us in case of a real crisis, which in our current situation looks a very real possibility. When Joel Matip hobbled off against Wigan there was real concern from the fans, and it’s clear how much we need another player in that position.

There are many questioning the move, suggesting that there are better options out there – like re-signing Kolo Toure for example – but Klavan looks like a solid player and would bring plenty to the side. The Echo also suggests he’d be happy with a small role at the club and on low wages, so if this deal were to go wrong it wouldn’t be a huge loss.
