There were very few Liverpool fans and zero pundits who thought Jurgen Klopp had made a smart decision over the summer by not buying a natural left-back as an upgrade on Alberto Moreno…
The Spaniard was ropey last term, but instead of entering the transfer market, Liverpool’s manager decided to switch right-winger James Milner into an auxiliary left-back – and it’s really working.
Against Hull on Saturday, the ageing Englishman was stupendous. Not only did he score both his penalties, but he was absolutely everywhere down the left flank. Defensively he was solid but he essentially became an attacking midfielder when we had the ball – heading infield, linking up and playing clever passes into his onrushing team-mates.
If we’d have signed a left-back this summer who’d come in and done as well as Milner has so far, we’d be losing the plot and hailing Klopp a genius; so the fact his ‘new’ left-back didn’t cost anything is all the more impressive.
