Ronaldo sets Mo Salah challenge after downplaying the importance of one amazing season

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted Mo Salah is in contention for the 2018 Ballon D’or, but said he, and a number of others, have to prove it over a long period of time to be regarded as truly great.

Our Egyptian is up for the gong, which gets announced on December 3rd, following his sublime performances in the 2017/18 campaign that saw us reach the Champions League Final.

He bagged 44 goals in all competitions and has 51 since arriving from AS Roma – a truly ridiculous stat.

Ronaldo won the Champions League again, and even though we don’t think he’s in the same league as Lionel Messi in terms of ability or overall contribution – his habit of scoring goals in the knockout stages likely makes him favourite.

Luka Modric won FIFA’s Best though; perhaps an indicator that he’ll be in the running this time around…

Ronaldo, in typical Ronaldo fashion, has suggested Messi won’t even in the top three.

“The same as usual, even if I don’t know if Messi will be on the podium this time,” Ronaldo said, cited in the Metro.

“So, let’s say Salah, Modric, Griezmann, Varane, Mbappe – the French in general because they are world champions.

“But I will wait and see if all these players are still at the top in 10 years, like Messi and I have done, and like we continue to do.

“Still there, on the podium, since more than 10 years.”

If we had won the Champions League Final in Kiev and Egypt had got out of their group at the World Cup, Salah would be favourite – but the fact he hasn’t collected any silverware this year will affect his chances.

Hopefully in 2019 he’ll win a trophy with Liverpool and cement his already legendary status.
