The Frenchman pulled up after just 27 minutes against the Championship side and limped off the field clutching his right leg.

The Liverpool Echo report that he will be out of action for a minimum of two weeks but say the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

The injury means the defender will certainly be absent for Liverpool’s next two games; Monday night’s game with Newcastle United and perhaps more devastatingly, the trip to Wembley to face Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa.

With the 25-year-old set to have a scan later this week, his time on the sidelines could yet be set to increase and see him struggle to make further games against both West Bromwich Albion and Hull City.

The news will come as a blow to Brendan Rodgers who is still having to contend with the loss of Martin Skrtel through suspension.

However, Emre Can should provide a timely boost by returning to the starting XI for the Magpies visit to Anfield after serving a one-game ban.

The absence of Sakho means the boss could once again ditch a three-man defence and field four at the back as he did against Blackburn.

And it has to be said both Lovren and Toure, who replaced Sakho at Ewood Park, put in a great shift to withstand the resilient Championship side and worked well as part of a conventional back-line.
