One almighty step backward!

Posted by

We never saw this coming did we?

We start positively, we have chances, we don’t capitalize on them, then we are punished and we struggle to pick ourselves up. How many times have we seen this happen this season, and last for that matter?

Skrtel was his usual self getting booked on his first clumsy challenge, then was wondering the the six-yard box marking no one when Demba Ba came in a struck goal number 2. Reina conceded a very soft goal off Scotty Parker, Wilson was too casual on the ball to my liking and then Kelly came off and we had to reshape the team.

Gerrard, Meirelles, Kuyjt and Suarez were meaningless in the first half. We were never inventive and always high predictable. We never really threatened and we quite frankly looked like taking an afternoon off. As usual, Jamie Carragher was perhaps the only one putting some passion into it. Cole came on late in the first half, but had barely any effect on the game. Our second half attempt to get back into the game was sporadic, disorganized and frankly unconvincing.

Through the confusion, Suarez invented some tricks and fired a shot across goal which Johnson pushed into the net with 7 minutes of regular time to go. Then another soft goal let in by Reina.

This is not the way to get to Champions League football. This is one almighty step backward! This seems like a déjà-vu from last season, we had the numbers to make it, but did not because we dropped too many points on the home stretch!

Yes this is all frustration, and I had to let off some steam. What a setback!

  1. Common everyone. instead of us all sulking on the loss why not be positive? Lets be honest 4th place wasn’t likely even if we won so why not liverpool break the trophy drought and try to focus on the europa league and try to get 5th or 6th in epl. Anways suarez looked impressive in the latter stages of the game. Man utd is next and we always tend to play good against them i think we can win.

  2. @ hassaan. Why wasn’t 4th spot likely? Who says so? Is it difficult? Of course it is. Is it possible? Bloody right it is. But not with this spirit. Even Reina looked demotivated today, and I truly hope he does not have the ‘Torres Virus’. I agree we can win silverware in the Europa League, but beware, its what we said/thought last season and we finished 7th with NO silverware.

  3. Never thought 4th place was likely but think Kenny made some really bad decisions today, Lucas looked shattered, Raul never did enough think his purple patch coming to an end, Gerrard used in this game to get match fit for next week
West Ham wanted it and they deserved the win

  4. Gerrard was poor today and looked uninterested for most of the match. If he lost the ball he never put in any effort or desire to track back in win the ball back. Wilson was shocking but he was forced to play due to our injuries and lack of quality depth. Carragher and Suarez were the only players that had a semi good game. Gave west ham too much time on the ball and too much space. 10 minutes into the game I knew we would lose. Spend spend spend in the summer!!!! Oh and Skirtle has been very poor this season and needs to be benches next season.

  5. BEFORE: madrid 0 1 liverpool liverpool 4 0 madrid liverpool 2 0 man u man u 1 4 liverpool liverpool 3 0 chelsea. chelsea 4 4 liverpool liverpool 4 4 arsenal liverpool 2 1 barcelona. liverpool 8 0 besiktas

    NOW: blackpool 2 1 liverpool newastle 3 1 liverpool blackburn 3 0 liverpool wolves 1 0 liverpool stoke 2 0 liverpool west ham 3 1 liverpool.

……………i dont get it. please eotk make an article on what we did wrong and what we should do next season to get in the top for and be facing europian giants.

  6. come on liverpool fc!! this not important anymore.. don’t give up hope until league is over.. have faith and believe reds!! next with the scum manshite united!!

  7. @ Tonio Bone well spot on we said the same thing last season finishing outside champions league and win Europa but we ended up winning nothing.the problem with the teams performance was the formation we had some opportunities before we conceded the first goal but the players was more interested in playing individual games for instance glen johnson we all know he likes to run at defenders but its always good to pass the ball quickly to your strikers rather than too selfish on the ball..in some matches i think we need to drop kuyt although he is hardworking but he lacks football passing vision and quality he does make too many touches on the ball,Gerrad looks so heavy in the centre midfield he was outran but became little lively in the second half..Pepe Reina does concede nasty goals and yet he is rated high we should all stop rating reina high.suarez was anonymous in the first half and came alive second half.we need to step up many players needs to be released come the end of the season because they are not just good enough, one cant look at our bench line and be proud never

  8. Carra shouting at everyone to cover up his own mistakes is hardly the same as “only one showing any passion.”

And Skrtel “wondering the the six-yard box marking no one when Demba Ba came in a struck goal number 2”? Lok at tit again. He’s with the first man, then sees Ba coming in behind him with no-one picking the lad up. Split second decision as to which one he marks. Goes with the first guy, Demba Ba gets the goal. Where was Carra? Wilson? Any of the other defenders? Yes he was poor today but dumping the blame solely on his shoulders is way off the mark.

Look at the captain, who sleepwalked his way through midfield, putting far too much pressure on both Lucas and the defence. Look at Carra who got done for pace and power all game. Skrtel was just ONE OF MANY who didn’t perform today.

  9. It is the kick up the arse we needed. Everything can not remain nice and rosey. Kenny is no fool. We will be stronger for this. No pain, no gain, blah blah, you know what I mean.

  10. @bryan Well for the first part of this season we played lackluster, conservative football with Roy at the helm. One thing we need to do, is be patient, which I fully understand is difficult as we don’t want to see the club outside the top four again. We need to give Kenny time to shape the club, gain quality players during the off season, and keep pushing forward.

  11. We were very poor at the back, including Carra. they put us under pressure from start to finish, we could’ve got back into the game at 2-1, Skertl mistake, game over

  12. Unlucky and terrible team today hope to see Carrol soon we need strength we looked so weak today, so disappointed to wait all week for this…

  13. Shameful display today…..No passion…..No commitment…… No excuse…. Sigh….. Hope Kenny can knock some sense into them… Cole was very poor…… I think Sterling, Suso and Pacheo should be blooded in now…. the chance for Champions League is fading away.

  14. Total crap. A display so bad it’s even hard to put down to words. Unbeaten run. Clean sheets. And then this? I can’t even pick one out… well maybe Suarez to say a good thing about. Like G_Mann mentioned, how much worse could suso, pacheco or sterling be than what we saw today? Come Kenny. I had hoped you would have eradicated this post-euro trauma syndrome. What an absolute load of bull that the team slackens after a game? It’s like saying me watching from 2 to 4am (which happens very often in Asia) and having a hangover at work the start of the work week and using the match as an excuse. Give them a kick for they truly deserve it. They let themselves down . There were 33pts for the taking. Well now 30 but it’s far from over this fight for 4th and even 3rd. We are Liverpool. Since when did we get so bloody accepting of our plight.

  15. Hey, you sound just like scum fans … It’s a minor setback, allright, but don’t exaggerated! It’s not the end of the world!!! Shame on you people!!! Stuck behind the team will you!!!

  16. some replies on this are shameful manc scented shit get over it we list it WILL happen again. We WILL be stronger an well done to west ham. for all those people who thought we would walz to 4th get your head out your ARSE an stop talkin shit. This season is our real recovery, get behind the lads cos if your mate was having a bad day you stick your arm around him an tell him chin up. LFC till I die an all you doom mongerers fuck off to city ya cunts.

  17. @bryn.
It is quite ciear we have midfield problems. We dont have any1 to play the ‘mascherano role’ or the ‘alonso role’. Lucas and Poulsen just aint good enuf.
Even though injuries fucked up our defence, thats nt an excuse.
    Solution:
    Yamvilla 4 dmf role .
    Charlie Adam for ‘Alonso Role’
We bring Insua back then sign Enrique, or the celtic leftback whose name i cant spell. We wont have leftback problems.
Our team would be good enuf to challenge 4 evrythng. Again.

  18. i just think this further highlights our need to bring in REAL quality to replace the likes of eggnog (PL quality my arse! championship at best!), kuyt (sick of explaining why sweaty boy is shite, proves me right game after game!), lucas (admittedly he has improved, gives away far too many free kicks in dangerous areas, squad player at best!), cole (i like him but just not working out for whatever reason, cash in!), carra (legend but needs to be fazed out!)
we need left back, coentrao would be my preference, cahill, young, hazard/turan

  19. This was a really poor performance, having said that, we should have had a penalty for hand ball and the referee generally was awful.

This is not a minor set back it is a step back to reality. West Ham are in the relegation zone, not good enough. The fact that we played on thursday is a factor, but it the Benitez era every player was monitored completely for their fitness levels. Some players did not look up to it today. Still too many weak links!

On the plus side Suarez showed moments of being a real top class player, shame he had no decent service!

  20. I do enjoy reading some of the articles on this website but my word the people who post on it are a bit short-sighted. Firstly, it was another case of a european hangover – our points collected from away games the weekend after a european game is shocking, and has been for a while. but if you look at the top two of last season, they have the same troubles – except they hardly ever play away games after midweek european games. You shouldn’t loose hope so quickly, remember that there is a helluva lot still to play for and we can still have a massive bearing on where the title ends up, as well as who gets the 4th champions league spot. Unfortunately we needed our big game players to step up, and they didn’t, but this doesn’t mean we should sack the lot of ’em?! Don’t be so quick to bite, there is still plenty of time, especially with the run in we have.

    YNWA

  21. I still think Liverpool need a strong defensive midfielder who can dominate in games. I’ve seen worse midfield displays, but we didn’t control the midfield and so didn’t control the game.

It’s obvious to me that left back is still a problem position. Moreover, once the first goal went in, the momentum completely shifted and the spirit and drive so obvious during our recent unbeaten run rapidly evaporated. Hopefully, the result will galvanise the team for the remainder of the season.

  22. a F*CKING DISGRACE thats what that was, its not Dalglish’s fault its the PLAYERS! theres a bad core of players in that squad, and i believe its headed by Gerrard, who is 5 YEARS past his prime and was utter shoite today! a clique of spineless letdown merchant CHOKERS!, who flop each and every single time we have the opportunity to really make a move at the top of the table!, SELL!!!!!!!!!!, major clear out needed!! Carragher and Gerrard, N’Gog, Lucas, all need to GO!.

The officials were just as bad as Liverpool today, and thats saying something, we got screwed out of 2 cast iron penalties for starters, maybe we should just start bribing them like Man Hoof do!?.

  23. this performance confirmed what we’ve been saying all season(and last, and one before that)..we aint got squad depth.players like ngog, lucas, skrtel, wilson(might be a youngster but not yet ready to start games for Liverpool)..and thing is,most of people hear speak like it’s the end of the world..ok we lost,we were 8 games unbeaten but even man utd who are top of the league table lost to wolves.man utd are top of the league table with their worst squad the last 15 or so years, with players like Fletcher and Carrick while we have Gerrard and Meireles!!but in the bench we have Ngog and they have Chicarito,we have Poulsen they have Scholes..that’s why.what Kenny,NESV and Comolli have to do,is create a new squad come summer.this season was lost by november when we were losing from the blue s*ite everton and blackpool at home,..etc etc.we can beat united at anfield(and we will i think)but what matters most is creating a top squad come summer..Luis Suarez has huge talent and he showed that today.if we buy 3,4 players like him we can even win the title..DONT LOSE FAITH REDS FANS..WHO THE F**K ARE MAN UTD..YNWA

  24. West Ham had thier best game of the season, we had one of our worst. This is football and sh** happens. We are no worse off today than we were yesterday.

We are 6th with 10 games left to play and with the way results are going this season (for all teams) anything can still happen.

Also if Rafa had stayed or Kenny had had the job from the summer who know where we would be now. (no disrespect to Roy, he was just the wrong manager for us)

So as Kenny said “We will just take every game as it comes…. we will add up points at the end. That will tell us where we will finish.”

  25. we lost the battle in midfield today. The team that controlled that area was going to win. Gerrard was prob gettin match fitness in more than being 100%. Lucas has improved but he gives away too many fouls, as does skrtel. We were doing ok, nothing fantastic until poor kelly pulled up. We dont have a player in our first team squad capable of dribblin and runnin at defenders- it really limits our attacking abilities. Ngog was wastelful shooting from so far out when he had support on the wings. I could go on, but west ham deserved the points- which grates me to admit. We werent going to win t he next 11 matches, but to lose in the manner we did was poor We need very favourable results in our favour in the coming weeks and we definitely need 3 points at anfield against spurs. All is not lost, but results of chelsea and spurs are important. If we are talking players for our first 11 id really like to see – m’vila or moussa sissoko instead of lucas. Adam, javi martinez, banega or someone who is composed on the ball along side. Left back- taiwo(contract running out this summer), enrique, coentrao. Centre back- sell skrtel, get in kjaer, subotic, roger johnson, cahill, sakho- anyone but skrtel. Wingers- robben ha ha hazard, affellay- someone with a spark. Some flair. Even n’zogbia! He is better than what we have on the left, cos we dont have anyone! He is becomin a liability. If reina leaves, given or ben foster. Bring in pacheco for ngog. But in reality, without champions league, i hope potential signings buy into what fsg are planning for lfc future.

  26. we capitulated at 1-0 down, absolute disgrace. Gerrard was way off form, totally sh*t performance from all of the players!!!

  27. We are talking about today’s game. Not about prospects or new players coming in. We are discussing today’s performance which was below par to say the least.
DEFINITELY NOT THE PERFORMANCE WE WERE EXPECTING! Let’s try to keep the discussion centred around this mates. There will be time and occasion to comment on future games and future players coming and hopefully leaving Liverpool.

  28. It was one heck of a stupid idea playing Kelly today after tweaking his hamstring on Thursday night, now he will miss the next few weeks because of this. It would have been a help if Dalglish had the vision to realise that a couple of away goals against Sparta would have been a help in preventing too much of the first choice eleven having to be used in the home leg against Sparta with a crucial game against West Ham only 2 days later. It is clear that Gerrard and Carragher are still picking the team. Gerrard should be the first guy sold in the summer, he is clearly past it. Why in God’s name do the club want to give Kuyt another contract? Once more just like against Wigan and so many other Premiership games this season, his inability to take on the responsibility of scoring goals for the team is glaringly apparent. Just like with Emille Heskey this ‘setting up chances for others’ while scoring a pitiful amount himself is never going to guide Liverpool to Premiership titles. Is it not about time also that Reina was sold? His clean sheet records from a few seasons ago are a distant memory and he clearly looks disinterested. The playing squad needs to be completely gutted in the summer. Including Reina,Gerrard and Kuyt their is at least 18 players including some out on loan who need to be got rid of. We badly need wingers and more muscle, height and pace in the team. It would be a huge mistake for NESV to give Dalglish any contract until at least the summer, because fourth place was thrown away today because of the lack of committment by the players. They behaved themselves up to the Wigan game and actually put in some effort but the comfort zone mentality embodied by this fascination with winning the mickeymouse Europa League has clearly resulted now in a malaise about having to win Premiership games. 69 points will not be enough now for fourth place so the remainder of this season should be used to blood the likes of Coady,Wisdom,Ngoo and Flanagan in the Premier League.

  29. Are you for real?

West Ham outplayed us today. Jesus, we cannot win every game. No one has ever said we will never lose another game. Fact of the matter is West Ham did well today and fair play to them.

  30. I don’t understand people hacking Gerrard after ONE bad game!! He’s bound to have his off days.

  31. Kaushal. We played a european tie without Stevie to let him rest. If he was not ready yet we could have taken a more cautious approach and fielded Spearing. Like many have commented here, this was more a game to get him closer to full fitness more than anything else.
We can safely say that apart from a few instants of brilliance from Suarez, the whole team had its ‘off day’ today.

  32. I know Tonio. It was a bad game for all and SG in more ways than one. But, here is our captain. He said that he didn’t need an exit clause in his contract. He said that signing the Liverpool contract is like signing a love letter. He has done enough good for us to command an off day or two in a season. I know I am being emotional here. But Stevie comes across a true devoted player in the crown of plastic, betraying, gloryhunter players. It just doesn’t feel right buddy calling him to be sold and whatever else. I am sorry if I don’t make a lot of sense.

As far as the performance goes, I don’t have words. I couldn’t believe it is the same side we were gushing about. But, to be honest, attack was always missing. We haven’t dominated attack. Never went bombarding the opposition defense even in the last 8-10 games. Defensive lines will sort themselves with youngsters, Midfield is almost there, the attack needs to pull up the socks. That said, we need wingers desperately.

One more thing I don’t understand. Lucas being the softest of all targets. All his faults are magnified. He has been one of the better players this season along with Raul. Let’s give him accommodation for an off-game too?

Chin up guys, we’ll be better. Kenny surely isn’t going to sit on this. Too bad for the Mancs that our wake up call came right before their visit.

Hey, and YNWA! to everyone of us fans, to our captain and to the rest of the players, and to King Kenny

  33. Disappointed but not entirely surprised.Tompkins did a total number on Suarez in the first half.Referee was a total retard.Fair play to West Ham who were clearly up for it and taught us a bit of a lesson, easy when they had so much control of the midfield.Saw more of Suarez’s class for our goal.Kelly pulling up and going off unsettled things enough at the back to let West Ham in for the second goal, which coming on half time killed us…Lets all be calm and rational about today’s events:Mr.Dalglish is no fool, valuable insights and lessons can be gleaned regarding the squad.Rome wasn’t built in a fucking day..Looking to the weekend now.Ahh another to chance to shit on Taggart and his ugly, retarded shower of shit.MAHALO

  34. I think it’s about time we be realistic. Due to our bad start this season under Hodgson, we will not get 4th. Too much ground to make. So let us concentrate on cementing 5th or 6th for next season’s Europa. Kenny will then have time to rebuild the squad and push for the league title next season. I am very optimistic about next season. So for this season, let us just take our medicine and fight to the best of our abilities and hopefully finish strong. Anything better than 6th this season is a BONUS.

  35. Reina is a disgrace this season. He was boozed up coming back from the world cup on the plane with Spain and he has been boozed up all season. Once more he did his impression of a statue for all 3 goals today. Someone should tell him that sometimes a goalie has to move to stop a shot or header as they are not going to be always directly at the goalie. Is Reina trying to shaft Dalglish in the hope Benitez will be coming back in charge? Why is Gerrard immune from criticism? His legs are clearly gone, would it be such a loss for the club to sell him in the summer and get Charlie Adam in instead? Why does Kuyt be immune from criticism? His goal return in relation to his time spent in and around the opposition penalty area was and is abysmal. To give a new contract to a guy whose game is based on scurrying around the pitch at his age is ridiculous as his legs are starting to go as well. Until this club wakes up to the fact that we need wingers Liverpool will continue to go backwards. Thanks to the mickeymouse Europa League, the club had only one day to prepare for this game against West Ham.

  36. If we had played our heart out and went down with a fight, it might have been a little easier to swallow….but we played very poorly… West Ham played their best game of the season because We did not play to our full ability. The players need to realise that and do justice to the Red Jersey that they wear.

  37. an AWFUL performance to start off with but hey guys, wts d point of going all guns blazing??wel,we lost but winning n losing iz part of it yea..d same ppl who r critisin now r d ones who were glowing praises for the past few weeks..so with just one loss, r we back to square one???i agree its an almighty step back but its liverpool guys..its our team..lets gv them sum encouragement than jz demoralising them with harsh comments!!!YNWA..liverpool for life..from sum1 who cares!!

  38. @Kenny
u said “Someone should tell him that sometimes a goalie has to move to stop a shot or header as they are not going to be always directly at the goalie”

r u serious? who are u? Reina is one of the best goalkeepers in the entire world! Y do u think Arsenal and Man Utd want him???

its like someone said earlier. A lot of u guys on here are critics NOT supporters.

Come on people, its just one loss and everybody is going crazy. This was our first loss in 9 games? I really like EOTK…but some of the comments on here are unbelievable!!!

  39. In response to Nate, you would seriously want to look at the 3 goals Reina conceded yesterday and you will see I am right. Reina getting a new and improved contract is a sick joke. Fans would want to wake up and realise players like Reina do not give a damn. Who do you think approached Man Utd and Arsenal about a move, quite simply Reina and his agent. I just saw that Kelly will be out for at least a month with a torn hamstring, brilliant decision by Dalglish to play Kelly after the guy went off with a twinge in his hamstring on Thursday night as any one with Dalglish’s experience should know that a hamstring twinge always turns into a tear unless you rest the guy for 2 weeks. I reiterate that a new contract for Kuyt is a sick joke, he has not done anything this season to warrant this. Gerrard as a captain is a sick joke, he does not dominate games and reprimand teammates like Greame Souness used to. Gerrard should not be allowed to walk back into the team automatically everytime he comes back from injury, it sends the wrong message to the rest of the team.

  40. Wah wah my pen!s. That’s all I’m hearing from you so called fans. Shocking level of criticism for one loss. We still have plenty of work to do but we knew that 2 years ago. Stick with it it’s called football. You don’t win everyone and when you lose you work to improve. If they can’t be sufficiently improved you move them on and buy someone new. The negativity does nothing of value other than demoralise the existing squad and management. I’ve had 3 years of doom and gloom. I’m not going to return to that for the sake of one defeat.

  41. The players do not give a damn about the fans opinions. These guys get paid tens of thousands a week to play properly and beat teams like West Ham. If they mess up they deserve to be criticised.

  42. I don’t blame them. If a stalwart like Steven Gerrard gets comments saying we should get rid of him after a short spell of injury and a couple of bad games then why should they care what you think? We got what we wanted after all these years of having the club held hostage. We are in a position to advance but it won’t happen overnight. Especially with injuries to key players like Agger, Meireles, Kelly and Carroll. Players like Kuyt will run all day but unfortunately he’s just not good enough for a starting position. We’ll have to look at the situation in the summer but until then we support them and ride the punches when they happen. It’s what family does. You Championship Manager fans have to realise that we’re dealing with human beings here. They will have off days. The better the player the less off days they have. The only way to get better players is waiting until summer. A witch hunt at this point is only damaging to the club at a time when the boss is trying to instill confidence and purpose into the players. Also remember that the league table is deceptive. West Ham boast a side full of internationals and possibly the best midfielder in the country right now (alongside Fabregas). They appear to be turning a corner and we may have run into them in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

  43. You are assuming Desy that Gerrard’s opinion means anything to me. It doesn’t. No player is bigger than the club.
