Mooted Steven Gerrard replacement ranked as Europe’s eighth best midfielder

Miralem Pjanic has been ranked eighth in a list of the Europe’s best defensive midfielders. The list, which is complied by Football Observatory, has produced a top 15 for each position.

The Reds have been strongly linked with the Roma midfielder as Steven Gerrard edges progressively closer to his move to LA Galaxy. The 25-year-old has scored eight times this season and provided six assists.

The Metro recently claimed that we are chasing both Pjanic and his midfield partner Radja Nainggolan this summer, talking up the possibility of an admittedly ridiculous £66m double swoop.

Bizarrely, just one Liverpool player can be found out of the 75 players named – centre back Dejan Lovren – who was ranked 12th in the list of centre backs. The likes of Chelsea’s John Terry and Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny did not appear at all.

While quite a compliment, even the most ardent of Dejan Lovren fans might be a little surprised to see him doing so well. The Croatian has had, at best, an average first season on Merseyside, with Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho still widely considered to be out first choice defensive pairing.
