Mateo Kovacic linked with Liverpool again; deal supposedly close to completion

Hands up if you’re sick of these rumours yet? We sure are. What’s getting us through is the fact that this deal looks to be inching, bit by bit, closer to completion. Reports of a potential move certainly refuse to go away and this latest effort from Tuttomercatoweb (via the Daily Mirror), comes with another positive for Liverpool.

They state that Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic will soon be on route to Anfield…

Brendan Rodgers and co are willing to pay €23m (£16.9m) for the Croatian youngster, with Roberto Mancini’s side holding out for €30m (£22m). However, both parties are open to compromise and a deal could be completed fairly early on in the transfer window.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph claims that we’re ‘closer than ever’ to getting this one over the line. With the two teams just £5m apart in their valuations, the most likely scenario is that we pay a base fee with a variety of additional add-ons, something that has been regularly utilised by FSG in the past.

These sort of deals are particularly helpful when signing a young player, as it requires them to develop and perform on a consistent basis before the full amount of the transfer is paid.

Kovacic, 21, is already fairly well-established at the top level, having played just short of 100 games for his current employers and won 20 caps for his country. But unfortunately, you never know how these players are going to take to English football and it’s good that FSG aren’t rushing into a deal, despite our need for another midfield signing.

Having already wrapped up deals for James Milner and Danny Ings, we look intent on pushing on with our summer business, and it seems quite possible that Kovacic could be new signing number three in the coming weeks.
