Sunderland close to sealing loan move for Liverpool striker Fabio Borini

Don’t worry – you haven’t fallen into a time warp and travelled back to 2013. Fabio Borini really is closing in on a second loan move to Sunderland, a year after turning down the chance to join the club on a permanent basis – as the Daily Mail are today reporting.

According to the Mail, the Black Cats are hopeful of sealing deals for both Borini and Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj, as they look to enhance a squad that lost its opening game of the season 4-2 at Leicester City.

Borini scored ten goals in 40 appearances during his first spell at the Stadium of Light, helping his side reach the League Cup final – in which he scored his team’s only goal – and avoid relegation.

Last season, the 24-year-old decided to stay at Anfield and fight for his place in the team, but struggled to make an impact – scoring just one goal in all competitions. This season, following the arrivals of Christian Benteke and Danny Ings, as well as the return of Divock Origi, he finds himself even further down our striking pecking order.

Like teammates Jose Enrique and Mario Balotelli, he has been told that he can leave the club this summer (via The Guardian). However, despite a raft of rumoured interest, it seems progressively less likely that the Reds are going to be able to offload any of the players on a permanent basis.

Nonetheless, it looks as if Borini could be the first of those to find a new employer. Hopefully this time he’ll take the hint and join the club on a permanent basis next year.
