The Mario Gotze to Liverpool news is real, if you had any doubts.

The German’s representatives are in ‘on-going’ talks with Liverpool about a possible marquee summer transfer, writes respected Merseyside correspondent Tony Barrett in the Times.

Last night James Pearce and Chris Bascombe strengthened the claims in the Echo and the Telegraph respectively, mooting a bargain £20m price-tag, while Barrett has also suggested Gotze will become one of our ‘highest paid players’.

James Milner, Daniel Sturridge and Christian Benteke are Liverpool’s biggest earners, on between £120k and £140k per week (via Total Sportek), so you can expect Gotze to perhaps usurp even these guys if he were to sign – having Bundesliga and World Cup winning pedigree behind him.

If Benteke departs, which the Echo says is likely, Gotze could effectively take up his wage ahead of next season.

Borussia Dortmund are keen on re-signing Gotze from Bayern Munich, but they’ve just acquired wonderkid winger Ousmane Dembele, which surely paves the way for the 23-year-old to sign for us instead.

We’ve already got Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana in attacking midfield, but Gotze would surely be the jewell in the crown. Under Jurgen Klopp, he could maximise his potential and become one of Europe’s most devastating playmakers.
