Liverpool want Aston Villa defender in most depressing transfer story of the day…

Seriously…?

Liverpool have added Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi to the list of potential signings for the position, reports French publication L’Equipe.

The 22-year-old was part of arguably the second worst Premier League side in history last season (only Derby’s effort in 2007/08 comes close), but according to the French, Liverpool are considering signing him from the relegated Villans – who are demanding what they paid for him: £14m.

Amavi can’t be blamed for Villa’s woes, as he only played nine games during the season with an injury. But Liverpool shouldn’t be spending £14m on Jordan Amavi. The former Nice defender is a decent prospect, but was never worth that kind of money in the first place, and certainly isn’t now he’s contracted to a Championship club.

It’s clear we need a left-back upgrade on Alberto Moreno, who let us down so badly in the Europa League Final, but in terms of concrete links – only Ben Chilwell has emerged – with the Daily Star among others suggesting we’re ‘close’.

Germany international Jonas Hector has also been linked, but reports of his potential transfer have gone quiet, while Raphael Guerreiro is moving to Borussia Dortmund instead.
