The media has been raving about Sadio Mane due to the 24-year-old’s brilliant start to the campaign, and rightly so, but Liverpool’s other expensive addition has been very impressive in his own right…
Gini Wijnaldum cost £25m from relegated Newcastle, which left some Liverpool fans scratching their heads – but Jurgen Klopp seems to be getting the best out of his Dutch acquisition.
“This is a very talented squad with a great coach,” Wijnaldum told the ECHO.
“I believe he is building something special here. I got that feeling when I first met with Jurgen Klopp. I knew this was the right club for me.
“I always had a good feeling about moving to Liverpool and things have gone well so far.
“I am happy to be a part of it. I feel blessed.”
For Newcastle, Wijnaldum often played on the wing or at no.10, meaning many Reds couldn’t really see where Klopp wanted to use him for Liverpool immediately.
Every Premier League match so far this term though Wijnaldum has played in a midfield three on the right of Jordan Henderson, with Adam Lallana in a similar box-to-box role on the left.
This maximises Wijnaldum’s energy, dynamism and physicality, and means he provides us defensive and offensive support – as proven by his two assists already.
With the likes of Emre Can and Marko Grujic waiting in the wings, Liverpool seem well stocked centrally.
What’s even better though is Wijnaldum’s comments about our team spirit, which has been visible after every result this term. The squad is together, playing well and fit – predominantly. Long may it continue.
