Returning Liverpool midfielder misses out on starting spot against West Brom

Reds star Georginio Wijnaldum will start on the bench against West Brom today despite recovering from an injury he picked up whilst on international duty for the Netherlands.

German midfielder Emre Can retains his place alongside captain Jordan Henderson having played against Manchester United on Monday night.

The news comes as a surprise with Wijnaldum’s return to training during the week leading many to believe he would step straight back into Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up.

His presence on the sideline, however, poses as a nice reminder of Liverpool’s strength in depth this season with his attacking attributes making him a substitute capable of making a difference later on in the game.

Can’s physical strength will be useful against the power of West Brom and the threat they pose from set-pieces.

He will be key in ensuring Liverpool win the midfield battle in order to give the team’s attacking talent plenty of opportunities to try and break down a packed defence.

The only change sees Adam Lallana come in for striker Daniel Sturridge.

Let’s take all three points, Reds.

Liverpool line-up: Karius, Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Can, Henderson, Lallana, Coutinho, Mane, Firmino.

Subs: Mignolet, Moreno, Origi, Lucas, Klavan, Sturridge, Wijnaldum.
