Surprising choice of referee named for Crystal Palace vs Liverpool

Posted by

The Premier League have just announced which officials will take charge of which games in next weekend’s Premier League fixtures.

And for our game the choice is somewhat surprising – Andre Marriner has been given the odd. (Evening Standard)

But why is that surprising you ask?

Well, it’s because the appointment comes less than eight months after he refereed the same fixture last season.

And that game ended in controversy as Marriner awarded us a dubious penalty. Ironically, the foul was given against Benteke, who now plays for Palace. The decision saw Alan Pardew throw his coat to the ground in disgust.

Especially controversial was the timing — the penalty was awarded in added time and saw us turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win.

“I saw the referee, he wasn’t giving it,” said Pardew. “That touch doesn’t warrant the dive he makes – and it’s the dive that makes the linesman’s mind up.”

We go into the game in third place with 20 points – level with City and Arsenal ahead of us. Palace are down in 11th place with 11 points from their nine games so far.
