Liverpool legend heaps praise on impact of Reds midfield maestro

The ever-smiling Georginio Wijnaldum will most likely have an even bigger grin on his face after receiving praise from club legend Jan Molby.

Liverpool’s summer signing from Newcastle finally scored his first goal for the club in last Sunday’s 6-1 win over Watford when he turned in a close range rebound late on.

Molby is a long term admirer of the Dutch international and has been impressed with how he has started his Anfield career.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “Wijnaldum is a clever player. I have always thought he was a really good player and he fits the way we want to play.”

“He breaks the lines and he makes great runs forward. He has had more of a deeper role so far at Liverpool, but it doesn’t surprise me that he can play there.”

“He is technically very good and the more you see of him, the more you like. He has an excellent goal scoring record from midfield.”

Wijnaldum has slotted into Liverpool’s central midfield trio well and has been unlucky to lose his starting place in recent weeks to Emre Can after missing one game due to an injury he picked up in the last international break.

The attacking support that he offers from midfield has been important in ensuring the team pushes plenty of bodies forward.

He is occupying the right positions upon his arrival into the final third, it is just a case of taking his chances in front of goal on a more regular basis.

His natural instinct to play on the half turn in deep areas has been key in terms of how quickly it allows him to make forward passes and initiate attacks from out of nothing.

More goals is the next objective for him.
