Wijnaldum explains what Liverpool’s main problem is – not tiredness

According to Liverpool’s Player of the Month for January Gini Wijnaldum, it’s a lack of confidence which is affecting the team right now – rather than a lack of energy.

We’ve played ten matches since the turn of the year, winning just once, but the Dutch international claims that other clubs have had similar fixture schedules and that we cannot use this as an excuse.

It looked like we’d turned a corner last Tuesday, earning a 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Chelsea following Wijnaldum’s excellent header, but for an inexplicable reason, Liverpool were dreadful next up against Hull – losing 2-0 to the relegation battlers.

Wijnaldum was benched for the trip to the KC Stadium, but with Emre Can horrible again, we’re hoping the former Newcastle man will be back in the side this weekend for Tottenham’s visit to Anfield.

“People from outside ask us what the reason is that we’re not performing as good as before,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“They ask you is it the number of games that we’ve played because we’ve played a lot of games in a row – but other teams have had the same and didn’t drop points and we did.

“Sometimes you’re in a flow and sometimes not. We’re in a situation where we’re not in a flow, but we must have confidence and faith we can change it.

“We showed it against Chelsea, but we have to show that against other teams we’re playing against. We must get the focus to play again like before, playing with freedom.

“If you don’t collect a lot of points, if you lose a lot of games and if you don’t play the way you played before, I think you lose a little bit of confidence.

The only thing we can imagine will reinstall this confidence is a Premier League win. Considering Spurs are direct rivals for the top four, this Saturday would be a perfect time to start.

We’ve 14 games left of the campaign, meaning Klopp will usually have a full week in which to prepare his team. We’re so much better when the players are rested and have time with the boss at Melwood between matches and hope this will enable us to secure a top four spot.
