Shock as Liverpool reject Ward loan deal; Klopp wants Danny fighting for no.1

This is a really surprising piece of transfer news…

Instead of allowing Danny Ward to join Huddersfield on loan for the season, and see how he does playing 38 games in the Premier League, Liverpool have rejected their offer, ESPN report.

Jurgen Klopp wants the Welshman competing with Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius for the no.1 jersey during pre-season and will allow the trio to start on a level playing-field.

It seemed obvious that with Mignolet enjoying such an excellent campaign, and 2016 signing Karius waiting patiently on the bench, Ward would be allowed to continue his development under David Wagner, Klopp’s friend who managed him so well this term just gone…

No club needs three top keepers, so another loan move to promoted Huddersfield suited all parties, on the surface.

However, Klopp’s decision to keep Ward with Liverpool shows not only his faith in the 23-year-old, but also his preference for a very strong, large squad.

Liverpool fans can now look forward to seeing Ward feature heavily in pre-season, although we have a feeling we’ll allow him to go on loan towards the end of the summer – once Klopp’s spent some time with him. There’s no way we’ll stunt his progression by letting him watch a campaign from the stands as a potential third-choice stopper, is there?

Then again, maybe he’ll usurp Mignolet and Karius and one of those will depart!
