What happened when Coutinho played for Brazil v Chile last night…

Philippe Coutinho didn’t steal the headlines for Brazil, but did play a vital role in crushing Chile’s World Cup aspirations.

The Liverpool No.10 helped his side cruise to a 3-0 win that subsequently diminished the Copa America holders’ dreams of making it to Russia 2018.

In doing so, Brazil ensured there will be no Alexis Sanchez at world football’s most prestigious tournament, not to mention one of the surprise package teams from the 2014 finals.

Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus struck a brace as a trio of himself, Coutinho and £200million man Neymar proved too much to handle.

A standout moment for Coutinho came in the build up to Brazil’s second, when the Reds playmaker directed a perfectly weighted through ball to the on-running Neymar, who squared to give Jesus a simple tap in.

Roberto Firmino was also present on the night, but only played a short cameo as he replaced his Liverpool teammate in the 87th minute.

Whilst Chile crashed out, there was a shock elsewhere as the USA were eliminated after losing 2-1 Trinidad and Tobago and seeing Panama beat Costa Rica 2-1 to snatch their place.

The qualification games have served as early evidence that Brazil will be a dangerous opponent for anyone come next summer.
