The German goalkeeper headed for the tunnel in tears after his two mistakes allowed Real Madrid to lift a third consecutive European crown.
His errors will inevitably come under scrutiny in a torrid post-mortem, but the first priority is tending to a man enduring a damning night in his career.
It’s not in Liverpool’s nature to turn ruthlessly on players, regardless of their mishaps or on-field struggles.
Carragher served up a reminder of that as he momentarily shielded his own disappointment to admirably offer his support for a fellow Red.
