Gini Wijnaldum has outlined why Liverpool’s midfield players are performing so well this season – and he’s absolutely spot on.
Alongside Fabinho, the Dutchman has really impressed in the last few weeks, and he feels there is a very simple reason for that.
Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, he said: “It’s always good if you have competition in one position because that means you have to perform to stay in the team.
“I think that has to be normal at a club like Liverpool because it’s a top team, one of the biggest teams in England, so Liverpool will always sign good players and that means there will always be competition in the team.

“That makes players even better – not only because you have an ‘opponent’ in your position, but also because you play and train against good teammates, so it makes you automatically a better player.”
With Naby Keita, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and James Milner also vying for a spot in the middle of the pitch, everyone has to be on top form all of the time to get a start. It’s no wonder they are all giving their best – anything less and they won’t make the team.
That’s the benefit of having a big squad – aside from the top-class cover for injuries and rotation options to keep everyone fresh.
Wijnaldum has benefited from increased motivation to perform more than anyone this season – he’s been superb for most of the campaign so far. Long may that continue as the Reds aim to win the league title.
