Explained: Why Reds didn’t sign Christian Pulisic

Liverpool had a bid of £11 million rejected by Borussia Dortmund for Christian Pulisic early on in Jurgen Klopp’s reign, but now the American has moved to Chelsea, it has been revealed why they didn’t come back in for him.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds were not prepared to go anywhere near the £57.5 million bid that Chelsea tabled for the winger, knowing that he only had 18 months left on his contract.

Additionally, Klopp does not believe that Pulisic would get into the Liverpool team at the moment, so would not want to spend that kind of money on him with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane already at the club.

The Echo also state that Klopp has not been interested in Pulisic since Xherdan Shaqiri was signed in the summer from Stoke City – a more experienced and proven option, not to mention a much cheaper alternative.

The Express, meanwhile, claimed a couple of days ago that a move for Nabil Fekir could be rekindled with the Reds no longer interested in Pulisic; Reds fans will certainly hope so.

No doubt some Reds fans would have been surprised that Pulisic ended up at Chelsea, but recent history shows Liverpool’s transfer team knows exactly what they are doing – they have done more than enough to be trusted.
