Wijnaldum sets bold target for the rest of the season

Gini Wijnaldum says Liverpool are more than capable of winning both the Premier League and the Champions League this season – and that is what they will aim to do.

The Dutch number five has been truly exceptional this season in the centre of the Reds’ midfield – and says it is possible for the season to be capped in the most remarkable way.

He said, via Goal.com: “The truth is we can win both, but both are very difficult. We have to believe it.

“Jurgen Klopp preaches to look only at it game to game. It’s difficult because [the end of the season] is not far any more and everyone is talking about it.”

Excitement will understandably continue to rise amongst the supporters, but there is no risk of the players getting too far ahead of themselves. They are all very grounded and know a single poor performance could end their hopes of a trophy.

Wijnaldum will be a key man when Bayern Munich come to Anfield on Tuesday for the Champions League last-16 first-leg match. It will be the latest huge game that he will hope to dominate, as he has done so often in the last 18 months or so.

While we all desperately want to win the league, European competition is hugely important too – the run to the final last season was brilliant.

Hopefully, we’re involved in both competitions right until the very end – and can get over the line.
