The Brazilian showcased his defensive value with a stunning recovery run to shrug Gerard Deulofeu off the ball and consequently thwart a dangerous counter-attack.
It typified Liverpool’s aggression in the early stages of the contest, with Jurgen Klopp’s men showing far greater conviction in all aspects of the game than seen in Sunday’s goalless draw with Manchester United.
The hosts lead thanks to Sadio Mane’s early brace, both of which were assisted by superb Trent Alexander-Arnold crosses.
