Besiktas manager Senol Gunes has absolutely weighed in on on-loan goalkeeper Loris Karius.
The German has spent the season in Turkey, but it hasn’t gone swimmingly and following Besiktas’s 3-2 defeat to Konyaspor at the weekend – Gunes has spoken out.

According to the manager, Karius hasn’t settled and is lacking any energy or willingness to improve – or even settle amongst the group.
“He was at fault for the goals he conceded,” Gunes said, reported in the Echo. “Karius has gone a bit stagnant, something is wrong with his electricity, motivation, enthusiasm for the game.
“It has been like that since the beginning. He does not really feel a part of the team, it’s something we haven’t been able to work out and, of course, I am partly to blame for this.
“Something is wrong, he has also been unlucky. [He] is talented but it hasn’t worked out and we have a problem. Let me put it this way, if I still had Tolga available I would play him.”
Imagine Jurgen Klopp saying that about a Naby Keita – or another Red who was struggling to adapt or find confidence?
It’s tantamount to bullying – making such claims in public – especially as Karius now needs to go and find himself another club…
It really does seem like Karius has serious potential mental health issues following the Champions League Final last season, sadly.
His blunders cost us the match, although it was later discovered that they were possibly the result of a concussion; resulted by Sergio Ramos’s sly elbow to his head.
We just hope he gets a transfer to a club with less pressure and he can start enjoying football again. Although after Gunes’s comments, few will consider taking him.
