Alisson reveals he could have joined Napoli last summer – and explains why he didn’t

Liverpool and Brazil goalkeeper Alisson could have joined Napoli in the transfer window that he signed for the Reds, but it didn’t happen for the stopper for one big reason.

He has a lot of respect for his former club Roma, and admits that he would have put himself in a difficult position if he’d have joined a rival club.

Ali clarified that there isn’t a derby between the two clubs, but the rivalry between Napoli and Roma was one of the reasons he didn’t consider joining them for long.

Napoli tried to bid for me, the President came to me, but if I went to Naples from Roma, I was going to put myself in a tough situation in Italy,Alisson told the Independent.

It’s not an official derby, but there’s a big rivalry between the teams. I admire Napoli a lot, they have a top squad and it’s always hard to play against them, especially when they are at home.

But I was committed to joining Liverpool.

To be fair to Ali, when Liverpool came knocking it was probably over for other clubs – we’re one of the best and most historic clubs in the world.

It’s definitely a good thing that he wouldn’t consider Napoli, because of his ties to Roma, which tells us that if he ever (God forbid) leaves us before his time is up, he’ll probably go to Spain or Germany.
