Former coach of 27y/o with ‘enormous speed’ offers his advice to the player amid Liverpool links

One reported Liverpool transfer target has been urged to remain at his current club instead of being lured by the six-time champions of Europe.

Earlier this month, The Mirror reported that Leroy Sane is Jurgen Klopp’s primary target when it comes to replacing Mo Salah, who continues to be coveted by clubs from Saudi Arabia.

Norbert Elgert, the Bayern Munich winger’s one-time youth coach at Schalke 04, believes that the 27-year-old is best off to stay put rather than returning to the Premier League, a division that he won twice with Manchester City.

Speaking to GOAL about Sane, the 66-year-old said: “With his style of play, he would make every top international and domestic team stronger. In my opinion, he is currently in the best of hands at FC Bayern.”

Elgert added: “Leroy has played a lot of really good games in the past, but at the moment he is consistently playing at an extremely high level and is stronger than ever before. Leroy has become more mature and experienced and uses his enormous speed in both directions much more often and more effectively.”

Having scored nine times for club and country since the start of the 2023/24 season (prior to Tuesday evening’s clash between Galatasaray and Bayern, as per Transfermarkt), Sane is a man in form and who, at 27, appears to now be operating at his peak.

It’s expected that Liverpool would have to part with a club-record transfer fee if they’re to land him from the Bundesliga champions (The Mirror), but if the Anfield hierarchy’s resistance over Salah eventually breaks in 2024, the Reds will instantly need a reliable replacement, such is the Egyptian’s incredible consistency.

As we’re painfully aware, he has the ability to come good in big games, netting the goal which consigned us to our only Premier League defeat of 2018/19 and ultimately ensured that Man City pipped us to the title by a point. He also scored in a Manchester derby win during the run-in to that campaign.

For as long as LFC hold onto Salah, there isn’t a need for Sane at the club, nor would he be likely to sacrifice being a consistent starter at Bayern to play second fiddle to the 31-year-old on Merseyside.

However, should the dreaded day of the Egyptian’s departure come next year, Liverpool simply must be primed and ready to get the Germany international through the door immediately, despite Elgert’s pleas for his former protege to remain in Munich.
