‘Makes more sense’ – Alan Pardew calls for Premier League to introduce new rule amid Merseyside derby controversy

Former Premier League manager Alan Pardew has called for the Premier League to introduce a new rule which would see players serve 10 minute sin bins instead of being sent off.

The 62-year-old’s comments come after Saturday’s Merseyside derby which saw Everton reduced to 10 men in the first half following Ashley Young’s two yellow cards.

The Toffees defender could have no complaints after two rash challenges on Liverpool winger Luis Diaz but Pardew believes a temporary dismissal would’ve been a more suitable punishment for the ex-Manchester United man.

“I think there should be a sin bin of 10 minutes for these two yellow cards, because I don’t really think they warrant the same as a red,” Pardew said live on talkSPORT (as quoted by Goodison News). “Therefore can you imagine if you had that situation where he goes off, he would have missed the period up until half time and the period after.

“And I think it makes for great TV, it would be great for the game to see the guy sitting on the bench, you have to defend for that period, you have to see it out, and then you get a boost when he comes back on. He’s paid his price.

“I think TV would love it, the sponsors would love it, the stakeholders would love it, and certainly managers would think it makes more sense, so I think everybody wins.”

Sean Dyche could have no complaints whatsoever about the red card Young received.

For a player of his experience he should’ve knew better to not dive in and commit yet another foul while already on a caution.

We can’t say we’re a fan of Pardew’s comments here. Why should a player be allowed to come back onto the pitch after committing two bookable offences?

This isn’t a rule we can see being introduced anytime soon!
