Danny Murphy has slammed reports linking Liverpool with Andre Villas-Boas…

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has rubbished reports that claimed the Reds were considering a move for former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas.

The original story – which can be seen here – claims that the Portuguese coach would be first in line for the Anfield hot seat, should Brendan Rodgers be sacked. AVB was interviewed for the position along with now Everton manager Roberto Martinez back in 2012.

In the Evening Standard, Murphy is quoted on his thoughts on the rumour, labelling the idea of sacking Rodgers as ‘ridiculous’: “Brendan deserves to keep his job,” he told a reporter. “It would be a shock if he does go.

“If for some reason he does, AVB would not be on the list of 20 managers to replace him at Liverpool, never mind be the number one. It’s ridiculous. He failed at Chelsea, he failed at Tottenham. Why would you take him at Liverpool?”

Villas-Boas is currently managing in Russia with Zenit St Petersburg, who like Liverpool will be chasing a place in the Last 16 of the Champions League this week when they take on Monaco, needing a win to progress.

He was last seen in England in December last year, but was shown the door by Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy, following the 5-0 home defeat to Rodgers’ Liverpool.
