Northern Irishman naturally desperate to keep hold of sublime 20-year-old…

After newspapers began to link Raheem Sterling with German giants Bayern Munich, Brendan Rodgers has lavished huge praise on the ‘outstanding’ 20-year-old, whom he naturally hopes will extend his contract with us.

Sterling is currently on 30k-per-week, but has not accepted the rumoured £70k-per-week extension which has been offered.

This has resulted in him being linked to various European giants, but Rodgers, and the whole of the club, are naturally desperate to tie Sterling down for the foreseeable future.

“I think Raheem has been brilliant,” Rodgers told his pre-Bournemouth match press-conference.

“I think he’s been absolutely outstanding.

“The kid played in a front role for me at the weekend, as a striker, moving across the line. He’s played there as a young player at QPR and he’s played there for Liverpool.

“He maybe could have got a goal at the weekend, but I thought he was absolutely outstanding. He puts defenders on the back foot. He’s intelligent in his game, his running ability, speed and ability to press the ball.

“He’s getting himself into some wonderful positions. The kid has been a real catalyst for us, in terms of our attacking threat. He’s such a big talent and he’s just turned 20 years of age.

“He’s a wonderful young player and he’s a very mature young man. I think he’s shown consistently over this last period that he’s been a real, real threat and he’s a top young player.”

This term, Sterling’s scored three times in the Premier League and registered four assists, which is a club high for both.

At times, he’s struggled with the main creative responsibility which has been on his shoulders following the departure of Luis Suarez and the injury to Daniel Sturridge – but in recent weeks, he’s shown glimpses of the levels he found last campaign.
