Who would have known that there was in fact such a thing as an anti-Martin Atkinson? As unfortunate as Liverpool have been while being officiated by Atkinson, the complete reverse is true for matches refereed by Andre Marriner.

In one of those bizarre football anomalies, the Reds have lost just three of 16 Premier League games refereed by Marriner, who will take charge of this Sunday’s clash between ourselves and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

As the Liverpool Echo suggests, the Reds are welcoming any signs that things might go in our favour this weekend, with our top four hopes still hanging in the balance despite the shaky form of those above us – specifically Manchester United, who have lost their last three games.

We remain four points behind our old foes from Old Trafford with just three games remaining, meaning we’ll likely have to take maximum points if we’re to have any hope of eclipsing Louis van Gaal’s side.

Marriner refereed our last win at Stamford Bridge back in 2011. So far this season he has officiated our 2-0 win over West Ham in January, the 4-1 victory over Swansea and the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle
