Gerrard ‘rejected’ Tottenham… apparently this is news

A number of publications have picked up some quotes from Steven Gerrard regarding potential alternatives to LA Galaxy after leaving Liverpool, and are acting like his ‘revelations‘ with regard to Premier League clubs he turned down are actually news.

Our former skipper explained that he received offers from a number of clubs abroad, but also “a few English clubs” – with Tottenham the only one he named.

The Express went with the headline: “Revealed: Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard rejected offer from Tottenham to join LA Galaxy”.

Of course he turned Tottenham down, as if there was even any question about it. Gerrard is a loyal Red, and it’s hard to see him turning out for any of our Premier League rivals. He is an absolute legend at Anfield, and he wouldn’t risk tarnishing his Liverpool legacy for the sake of one more year in the Premier League with Tottenham.

“A few English clubs called but I wouldn’t play against Liverpool,” Gerrard said (via the Daily Mail).

“There was interest from Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

“It was good to know he still rated me. I was sure I could play in the Premier League for another year but there would not have been much of a buzz doing the same thing all over again with Tottenham.

“The first offer came from Besiktas, then managed by Slaven Bilic. Monaco were next. They came in strong. Paris Saint-Germain were also very keen.

“David Moyes called my agent a couple of times, to see whether I would be interested in playing for him at Real Sociedad.”

A move abroad to one of Europe’s other top leagues would have been more understandable, as he still boasts more than enough quality to play for an elite club.

A switch to the MLS was clearly the best for all parties, as Gerrard gets one last move, but is unlikely to ever have to line up against his former club.
