BBC name huge Liverpool transfer target, claim Benteke is for sale

According to respected BBC Sport journalist Ben Smith, Liverpool will look to sell Christian Benteke at the end of the season.

We’ll also consider signing another keeper to compete with Simon Mignolet for the no.1 jersey, while we’re still interested in Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze and Udinese’s Piotr Zielinski, Smith tweeted yesterday.

Following yesterday’s defeat to Southampton, Benteke’s departure looks all the more inevitable. Jurgen Klopp publicly roasted the striker after the 3-2 loss, and it’s blatantly clear he’s just not in the German’s long-term plans.

Another keeper to compete with Mignolet for the no.1 jersey makes sense, considering the fact the Belgian stopper recently signed a five year extension – but has made a number of high profile mistakes.

Liverpool already have Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino capable of playing attacking midfield, but Gotze – who worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund – would be the jewell in the crown.

He’s scored the winning goal in a World Cup final and is still only 23.

Zielinski is less heralded. The 22-year-old Polish international is shining on loan at Empoli in Serie A, but is owned by Udinese – who we’d have to deal with to seal a deal.

With Liverpool already securing a deal for Marko Grujic, it’s interesting to hear we’re after further central midfield reinforcements. It says much about the chances of the current contingent of keeping their places long-term. That’s including captain Jordan Henderson, who’s been linked with moves away recently (via Daily Mail).
