As the dust slowly settles on out first major transfer of the summer window, Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has been speaking about our new stopper.

According to the Echo, the former Germany international thinks it would be extraordinary if Mignolet starts the 2016/17 season as out number one – even though new boy Loris Karius is set to possible miss the opening three games due Olympic Games duty in Rio de Janeiro.

“Klopp said in a press conference that he wants someone to challenge Mignolet, and the fact he has the number one shirt makes me believes he will start the season in goal,” said Hamann.

“Something could happen, he might not hit the ground running.

“But I think something extraordinary has to happen in pre-season for Mignolet to keep goal in the first game.”

Despite his beliefs, he did have a few words of caution for the 22-year-old:

“Germany has a history of outstanding goalkeepers, and Karius is clearly very talented, but playing for Mainz and playing for Liverpool are two different things,” he continued.

“His task now is to make that step up to the next level.”
