Phil Thompson is a Liverpool legend, winning seven league titles and three European Cups with the club between 1971 and 1984.

He’s also a person who’s never been afraid to speak his mind, occasionally putting him at odds with both Liverpool fans and players – indeed, Robbie Fowler was hugely critical of him in his autobiography.

And now the former England international’s latest comments will not have done his standing any favours.

According to the 62-year-old, we’ve massively overspent on Sadio Mane – though he does think the signing will be an important one for Klopp.

“I think we’ve paid far too much for him,” Thompson said (via SkySports). “It’s the same with Manchester United stumping up £30m for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, a 27-year-old who doesn’t score as much as Mane.”

“I see it as an absolutely pivotal signing though,” he continued. “One that was needed as the other attacking midfielders are more technical players and don’t really have the pace.

“Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino are all quite similar so I’m not surprised Klopp has looked to add something different – a player that gives them a threat on the counter-attack and also adds goals.

“Daniel Sturridge also seems to have lost his pace a bit, probably due to the amount of injuries, which we saw with Michael Owen, so there’s only really Divock Origi who can stretch teams.”
