Echo names nine potential Liverpool centre-back options; Demichelis & Dante included

Posted by

With Martin Skrtel sold, Kolo Toure released on a free, Steven Caulker’s loan spell over, Tiago Ilori at the Olympics, and Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez injured for a significant period, Liverpool have no choice but to enter the transfer market for a centre-back this summer.

We’ve already acquired Joel Matip, who’ll likely start alongside Dejan Lovren, on a free transfer, but due to departures and injuries we’re looking very short in this area for the start of the campaign.

The Echo are certain that Jurgen Klopp will enter transfer market to sign another central defender, and have composed a list of nine potential arrivals – which includes some players already at the club.

We’ve listed their choices, and added our own input as to whether we’d be pleased with the buy.

Lucas – Liverpool

Definitely proved he can fill in at central defence, and would mean we can keep our longest serving player, too. Wouldn’t cost us anything, and as an emergency backup, he’s more then capable.

Tom Brewitt – Liverpool

Haven’t seen much of the lad, but he’d be behind Lucas and Andre Wisdom of the current crop. The fact we’re going to bring in a new defender probably rules out Brewitt’s promotion.

Martin Demichelis – Unattached

Positionally excellent and composed on the ball, Demichelis was slated for his (lack of) pace at City, but has Premier League experience and could definitely do a job for a limited time.

Steven Taylor – Unattached

No thanks. Not good enough for the Premier League, and now deemed not good enough for Newcastle in the Championship either. Would much rather promote from within than acquire Taylor.

Thomas Vermaelen – Barcelona

If we can loan the Belgian, brilliant – but we wouldn’t want us to spend money on an injury prone defender who’s coming in to cover for the injuries we already have!

Scott Dann – Crystal Palace

Doesn’t make sense, this one. Would be expensive, but wouldn’t get in the team. At 29, there isn’t much room for improvement, and despite the fact he’s a boyhood Red, there are more financially smart options.

Dante – Wolfsburg

Brilliant at Bayern, the Brazilian is 32 and winding down, but would command a decent transfer fee which is not something we’d advocate for a backup defender. Would be a cool signing, but really we should have targeted him back in 2012 before he joined Munich.

Chris Samba – Unattached

Excellent at Blackburn, Samba’s now 32 and having just been released by Dynamo Moscow, represents too much of a risk for us.

Kolo Toure – Unattached

This deal would make sense. Give Toure another year. We know what he’s capable of, he proved it on countless occasion last term. Loves the club and would delight supporters. A no brainer.
