Mario Gotze is close to rejoining his former side Borussia Dortmund.

Reports in Germany this evening (Bild) which were consequently picked up by the British press (Mail) suggest the 2013 Champions League runners-up have agreed a £23 million deal.

It is understood he’s sign a five-year deal with the club.

The news will undoubtedly divide the Dortmund fanbase – earlier this year they unveiled a banner saying “Milan or Madrid. Just not Dortmund. P*** off Gotze”. The World Cup winner used to be the darling of the club, but turned from hero to villain when he signed for their arch rivals Bayern Munich three years ago.

Of course, we’re disappointed that we couldn’t lure him to Anfield. In truth, the chance probably evaporated when we lost to Sevilla and missed out on a Champions League place.

We can’t help but feel pleased that he’s gone to Dortmund rather than Spurs though – Bild reported earlier this week that his agent had met at least twice with Spurs representatives.
