Heroic ex-Red explains why he thinks Loris Karius should be given the nod on Monday

Neil Mellor is an unassuming Liverpool hero. He might not have had much of a “glamour factor”, but he is fondly remembered for two incredible moments — that stunning late winner against Arsenal a decade ago, and that goal against Olympiakos in the Champions League that paved the way for Gerrard’s “oh you beauty!” moment.

As such, we should pay heed to what he thinks.

And right now, he’s saying Loris Karius should be given the nod over Simon Mignolet in the clash with Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd side at Anfield on Monday night.

“I think you have to be fair to Loris Karius. He’s had two Premier League games and while he might have looked a little unsure against Swansea, it would be hard to make a judgement so quickly,” he said (Echo).

“Mignolet will push him but I’d expect Karius to get the nod against United despite Mignolet having more experience in that respect. You speak to goalkeepers and they say ‘If you’re number one, you’re number one’ and you’ve got to stick by that.

“It’s clear that Karius is Jurgen’s number one and while it’s clear he’s still settling into the side and adjusting, hopefully we’ll see a better performance than against Swansea.”

There has been some debate in the fanbase over which keeper should start. It’s probably fair to say that Mignolet has enjoyed slightly better form than Karius’ showed in his two league starts. But Karius was bought to be number one and some say we should, therefore, let him grow into that role.
