Here’s a serious turn up for the books…
It turns out that Southampton’s monster centre-back Virgil Van Dijk has a very affordable £25m release clause, which can be activated as early as January, reports the Daily Mail.
Both ourselves and Manchester City are mighty keen on the Dutchman who joined from Celtic in 2015.

Liverpool put in a shocking defensive performance on Sunday without Joel Matip available, and there’s serious doubts about whether Dejan Lovren is a long-term option at the heart of defence. Mamadou Sakho is a certainty to leave this winter, while Ragnar Klavan is the wrong side of 30 and Lucas is better in midfield.
In this day and age, £25m is not an enormous fee, especially considering John Stones cost almost £50m and the likes of Eliaquim Mangala, Skodran Mustafi and Nicolas Otamendi all cost way over £30m.
Van Dijk is physically unbelievable but is technically capable as well and would seemingly suit us perfectly. He’d jump at the chance of an Anfield switch too – it just depends whether Klopp feels the need for him.
Hopefully, he’ll take a punt. The thought of a Van Dijk/Matip partnership is mouthwatering.
