CIES Football Observatory have released their list of the ten best players in each position in Europe, and three Liverpool players have made the cut!
James Milner, often criticised by Liverpool fans for his lack of a left-foot, has been named as the fourth best fullback in Europe’s Top 5 leagues, based on cumulative statistics such as tackles, passes, interceptions, ground covered, goals scored, etc.
The only players ahead of him are Alex Sandro, Marcelo and David Alaba, and he beats the likes of Dani Carvajal and Filipe Luis!
Coutinho is the joint 4th best winger, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar and level with Lorenzi Insigne.
But perhaps most surprising is that Dejan Lovren makes the top 10 list for centre-backs, despite Liverpool’s largely poor defensive record.
We have kept four clean-sheets in our past five games, but throughout the majority of the campaign we’ve been woeful at the back and it’s cost us a title challenge.
Still, Lovren joins the likes of Javi Martinez, Mats Hummels, Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly in the list!
