Liverpool have finally signed Virgil van Dijk, and if anyone was in doubt, he’s even done the Melwood lean now!
Our new record signing won’t be available for today’s clash with Burnley, but we’ve took January 1st, (2018, by the way!) to present the £75m Dutchman.
No club in the history of football has paid as much for a defender as Liverpool have for van Dijk, but he’s been Jurgen Klopp’s no.1 target from the summer – and we’re just glad the club have backed our superb manager.
To be fair, FSG deserve enormous credit. Following our mistakes in the summer, they didn’t try to barter with the Saints; they just paid what was asked.
Van Dijk cannot wait to show us he’s worth the money…
“I am happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” he told the official website.
“I think the most important thing is the size of the club, the culture of the club, the players, the manager and obviously the fans, who make the club this special.
“With the history at the club and everything around it – even the training ground and stuff – it is just a perfect, perfect match for me, and a perfect match for my family as well.
“I think it’ll be something special,” he said. “I think Anfield is a very special stadium and it is my home right now as well.
“I am just looking forward to being on the pitch, especially as a [home] player at the stadium. It’s going to be nice, especially the evening games and the European nights.
“I hope to win trophies. Every player wants to win trophies and with this squad we have and the progress the club is making, I think we are very close to it.
“Obviously we still need to do it and we will see what the future brings.”
I mean, it’s pretty PR, but we can’t disagree with him!
If van Dijk can become the man we build our defence around, Klopp’s Liverpool are capable of anything.
If it wasn’t for silly mistakes, we’d be second in the league right now.
It might be biased, but from what I’ve seen, only Manchester City are better.
The attack is sorted, but van Dijk is the first jigsaw in a defence to rival Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic!
