Garth Crooks’ epic description of Virgil van Dijk

For some bizarre reason, Garth Crooks left both Fabinho and Andy Robertson out of his BBC Sport Team of the Week!

The Brazilian was Man of the Match against Manchester United, and Robbo’s energy down the left flank was simply jaw-dropping.

But Crooks did select Virgil van Dijk, who in our mind, has been the Premier League Player of the Season so far – describing the Dutchman in scintillating terms.

“The big Dutchman could play football in a cardigan and carpet slippers while smoking a pipe,” he said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Liverpool defender look so comfortable at the back in a match against Manchester United. Virgil van Dijk is looking supreme these days and this victory for Liverpool never looked in doubt.”

The manner in which van Dijk pocketed Romelu Lukaku was especially impressive. The Belgian striker might be in poor form, but he’s a £90m striker and was made to look like a Championship player by Virgil.

Regardless of who plays alongside him, whether that be Joe Gomez, Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren, van Dijk makes our defence look terrific.

This Premier League campaign we’ve conceded just seven goals in 17 matches – a sublime record.

If we can keep it up throughout the season, we’re going to have a genuine chance of title glory.
