Hilarious: Rival’s sneers from when Liverpool signed Van Dijk have not aged well

Virgil van Dijk has been absolutely immense this season for Liverpool and has become a £75 million bargain – but he hasn’t always been viewed that way.

Less than 12 months ago, the Dutch powerhouse was still playing for Southampton; it was only this January that he made the switch to Anfield.

At the time, £75 million seemed like a lot – but it certainly doesn’t now.

Some of the replies to the Sky Sports tweet that confirmed the move are now hilarious – and prove why you shouldn’t be too hasty to make bold statements online!

One said: “Great business for Southampton”, while another sneered that he wouldn’t even give his leftover turkey from Christmas Day for the defender.

One other comment of note described Van Dijk as the ‘Dutch Lovren’ – a comment that has not aged well on either count.

Several other Twitter users called the deal ‘daylight robbery’ and said Van Dijk was ‘bang average’.

Just like every other deal done by Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp, Van Dijk has been brilliant – these comments could not look more ridiculous if they tried.

One thing is for sure: rival fans aren’t laughing about him any more.
