Trent: Why ‘important’ Brighton win meant so much to the Reds squad

Trent Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Brighton was a huge result for the club in the title race – because it proved to everyone that they are not about to slip up.

After two successive defeats – to title rivals Manchester City in the Premier League and then Wolves in the FA Cup – questions over mentality would have been asked had the three points not been picked up.

Alexander-Arnold, who picked up a slight knock in the warm-up but still completed the 90 minutes, was under no illusions what the victory meant.

He told LiverpoolFC.com: “No matter what, every game is important for us, but especially this game.

“We knew we needed a win to get the momentum back and show that we are a really top-quality side and that’s what we’ve done.

“Questions were probably asked about our mentality and how we would bounce back from a [Premier League] defeat because we hadn’t experienced it so far [this season]. I think it was important for us to show everyone that we are a top-quality side and to bounce back.”

Prior to Spurs hosting Manchester United on Sunday and Manchester City playing Wolves on Monday night, the gap to second place was increased to seven points with the win over Brighton.

The players have certainly put themselves into an excellent position to win the league title this season as long as the level of performance is maintained – and there is no reason to think it won’t be.
