Liverpool midfielder sets his sights on a Reds’ double

Gini Wijnaldum is targeting a Premier League and Champions League double for Liverpool.

The Dutch midfielder says the Reds’ emphatic victory against Bayern Munich in the last 16 shows their ambition to challenge for both titles.

It felt great because a lot of teams struggle to come and get a good result at Bayern,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “We had confidence we could do it. After the first game people were asking: ‘Is this a good result for the second leg?’

We were confident because we did not concede at home and we know the way we play football we can create chances and score goalsWe felt what it is to play in a final last season and the journey was great. We want it again.”

It had been a while since Liverpool challenged on the big stage in Europe and last season gave us a taste for it – we want it again too, Gini!

At a club like Liverpool you have to win everything possible and you have to play for both – the Premier League and the Champions League,” he continued.

It suits Liverpool to play for both. Look at Manchester City, they are not only going for the title or the Champions League. It’s a big club – so is Liverpool – so you go for both.”

Wijnaldum fancies a trip back to his homeland as we await our fate in the quarter final draw.

Ajax are in and if it works out that way, why not? They are a good team and press high. They’re also a team that suits us, the way we play,” he said. “Last season I said I did not want to play Manchester City – and we got Manchester City so we will see!

The Reds don’t have much time to bask in the warmth of victory following the victory at the Allianz Arena. This Sunday we have an opportunity to reclaim top spot in the Premier League.

We’re in fine goal-scoring form at the minute as we travel to Craven Cottage on Sunday; we’ve bagged 12 times in our last four games.

On the flip side, Fulham haven’t kept a clean sheet since the beginning of February and are there for the taking.

It’s going to be an exciting end to the season. Wine for my men – we ride at dawn!
