Liverpool’s heroic no.4 Virgil van Dijk is keen to tie his long-term future to the club with a contract extension.
This is according to trusted reporter Melissa Reddy, who has made the claims in ESPN.
According to her article, the club and van Dijk are ‘relaxed’ about the situation, considering the Dutchman is already one of Liverpool’s best earners and he has three and a half years to run on the deal he signed in January 2018 upon his arrival from Southampton.
However, van Dijk’s jaw-dropping campaign, which him saw him win the PFA Player of the Year award and the Champions League with Liverpool, will earn him a bumper extension.
This, in our opinion, is no less than the 27-year-old deserves. His performances have been incredible and we’d argue that a better defender has never graced Anfield – high praise considering Alan Hansen marshalled our backline in the 1980s.
It’ll be interesting who begins next season as van Dijk’s first-choice partner.
Joel Matip has been largely faultless since winning a spot alongside him, but Liverpool have incredibly high hopes for Joe Gomez, who started the season in the side and was superb before his injury.
Then you have Dejan Lovren, a defender Jurgen Klopp rates and someone who last year played in a World Cup Final.
Whoever it may be, one thing is clear: Liverpool’s defence with van Dijk as its leader is currently unrivalled.
