Champions League and Merseyside derby hero Divock Origi is set to sign a new contract with the Reds, according to The Mirror.

Having been at the club for a few seasons with limited impact before the last few months, few people saw his upturn in fortunes happening, but no one can say an extension would be undeserved.

During the last season, Origi made himself a crucial figure in the squad and in the Reds’ history books.

In the very long-term, the Belgian is probably not going to stay at the club as he will want more first-team football, but after the heroics he came up with on a regular basis, including crucial goals in the Premier League and against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, he deserves the option to stick around.

There is an argument that the Reds should sell Origi this summer while his value is at its peak, but we would rather he was allowed to stay if he wants to.

The most likely scenario is that he stays another year and reassesses the situation next summer, having had a season of Anfield loudly singing his name.
